    The San Tomas Community

    Area residents fight to maintain rural neighborhood feel


    Nineteen years ago, the city of Campbell annexed the San Tomas area--a square-mile-and-a-half of territory running southwest of the San Tomas Expressway and Winchester Boulevard out toward Los Gatos and Saratoga. Back then, it was a rural neighborhood of quiet streets, farmhouses and orchards. After the annexation, hundreds of housing units were built in San Tomas, and neighbors started to worry that the city was encroaching on their community in a bad way. They formed a citizens group, the San Tomas Neighbors Association, to resist what they saw as attacks on the area's unique character. In the group's latest battle, members are taking a stand against the city's planned improvements on neighborhood roads.   More
