Nguyen Pham
Campbell trumpeter joins ensemble for Brass Day
By Melissa Matchak
Campbell resident and California Youth Symphony member Nguyen Pham will join the senior brass ensemble in performances at the California Youth Symphony's Brass Day on April 28, at noon in the music wing of Lynbrook High School, 1280 Johnson Ave, San Jose.
Brass director Peter Nowlen will present master classes with guest clinicians on each instrument, a brass choir reading session, trumpet choir, horn choir and low brass choir reading sessions.
The day will conclude with a free concert at 4:30 p.m. featuring the California Brass Quintet, the California State University Sacramento Horn Ensemble and the California Youth Symphony Brass Ensemble.
Pham, who has been a member of the Youth Symphony for four years, said he became interested in playing the trumpet after hearing the soundtrack of Jurassic Park, which he said is filled with trumpet music. He has been playing the trumpet for eight years and plans to continue playing in college. Pham will graduate from Westmont High School in June and hopes to attend UC-Berkeley, where he said he would like to participate in the marching band and university symphony.
Cost for participation in Brass Day is $5 for students and $8 for adults, and the concert is free for all. To register for Brass Day or for more information, call 650.325.6666, or go to www.cys.org.
