County looking for input about parks

The Santa Clara County Parks Commission is undertaking a strategic planning effort to guide the design and development of county parks over the next decade or two. Five public meetings will be held so that the commission can receive input from citizens about what they would like to see happen. The first meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, April 28 at the Campbell Community Center, 1 W. Campbell Ave. The second is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday May 1 at the Shirakawa Community Center, 2072 Lucretia Ave, San Jose.

For more information, visit the County Parks website at www.parkhere.org, or call Jane Mark at County Parks at 408.358.3741 x152.

Vet events planned for month of May

A walkathon is being held in honor of Veterans Appreciation Month. The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 12 at Alum Rock Park, 16240 Alum Rock Ave. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the walk will commence every 30 minutes, with the last start time at 1:30 p.m. Pledges are being taken, with the proceeds being given to veterans organizations and scholarship funds, such as the Bill Estes Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Vet Center will also be putting on a celebration from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, May 11 at the Vet Center of San Jose, 278 N. Second St.

The Employment Development Department will be working extra hard this month to find jobs for veterans.

Veterans Representative Ken Schieck said the department is tasked by the Department of Labor to find veterans jobs.

"We provide them with employment information," he said. "We tell them where to go, how to put a resume together."

Schieck said veterans receive priority status when it comes to placing them in jobs so that they don't have to compete. For more information about jobs for veterans, visit caljobs.com.
