Dale Clyne
Man arrested after overnight standoff with SWAT Team
Suspect with violent history was wanted on parole violation
By Jeff Kearns
A Santa Cruz County man wanted for a felony parole violation was arrested before dawn April 19 after an overnight standoff with the Campbell SWAT Team.
Dale Michael Clyne, 39, was found hiding in a cabinet shop on Cristich Lane just after 9 p.m. the night before his arrest, but he didn't respond to repeated requests by officers for his surrender.
Just after 5 a.m., with Clyne showing no sign of giving himself up, Campbell police lobbed teargas into the building. When that didn't work, officers entered the building. Clyne was found in a loft and arrested without incident. He was taken to Santa Clara County Jail.
Clyne's criminal record includes arrests for assault with a deadly weapon, assault on police officers and resisting arrest.
San Jose Police were trying to track down Clyne for the Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Office, who believed that Clyne was living in San Jose. The place where he was hiding turned out to be in Campbell.
Because Clyne had a history of violent behavior, San Jose police did not enter the building where he was hiding and instead alerted Campbell police, who assembled the SWAT Team.
Campbell police Capt. Russ Patterson said officers at the scene couldn't persuade Clyne to give himself up, but a friend of Clyne's who was in the shop at the time did come out and talk to police, but said that Clyne wasn't going to come out. Police used a bullhorn and a phone to try to convince Clyne to emerge from his hiding place in a loft inside the business. Patterson said Clyne may have been living in the loft prior to his arrest.
Clyne was booked on the parole violation. Patterson added that Clyne was not found with any weapons. At press time, a spokesman for the Santa Clara County Jail said Clyne was being held without bail until authorities from Santa Cruz County could arrange to come pick him up.
Patterson said Cristich Lane and parts of McGlincey Lane were blocked off during the standoff. Officers from the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department helped with traffic control and Santa Clara County sheriffs deputies also assisted at the scene. San Jose police spokesman Sgt. Steve Dixon said officers from his department assisted in the operation until the Campbell SWAT Team arrived at the scene.
A spokesman from the Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Office was not immediately available for comment.
