Board Tea held at historic home

The 15th annual city of Campbell Historic Preservation Board Tea was celebrated on May 15 at the recently renovated home of Lena Campbell Swope, the granddaughter of Benjamin and Mary Campbell.

The California colonial cottage home, located at 63 N. First St., was converted into offices by Roger Cummings and Jennifer Scott, who took great care in preserving as much of the original exterior and interior as possible. Cummings and Scott said that a six- to eight-month project turned into an 18-month labor of love.

During the tea, the Campbell Preservation Board recognized Cummings and Scott for their preservation efforts and also honored Thai Orchid Restaurant owner Marie-Rose Reyes for creative and adaptive reuse of a historical building. Her eatery is located on E. Campbell Avenue. The board also honored developer David Neale for the Orchard Grove Residential Neighborhood on Harrison Avenue.

    Commission OKs Walnut Dr. home

On May 14 the Campbell Planning Commission approved the building plans of Roy and Adrienne Divittorio to build a home at 1512 Walnut Drive. The property, located within San Tomas Neighborhood Association boundaries, had been submitted to the commission for consideration on April 9, but several neighbors complained that the home did not conform to the area and was too large. Roy Divittorio agreed to consider changes to the home, but pointed out that he had already invested $12,000 and was frustrated by the length of time required in obtaining approval for the project.

Although the plans were approved by the commission on May 14, Adrienne Divittorio told the commission that the process her family went through was not fair because decisions were made based on personal opinions and not the established guidelines.

In other news, the commission also approved a façade remodel for San Tomas Plaza, at the corner of San Tomas Aquino Road and W. Campbell Avenue.

The plaza will also increase its parking from 488 to 505 spaces by reconfiguring the parking to eliminate the driveway on the northerly side of the freestanding building adjacent to San Tomas Aquino Road. The plaza also plans to improve its landscaping and add new lighting.
