    Montarbo an MVP

There were many talented baseball players competing in the Coast Conference this past spring, but none were more talented than Adam Montarbo of West Valley Community College and Bryan Grochol of Cañada.

At least, that's the way the conference coaches saw things when they named the two baseball stars the most valuable players in the two divisions of the Coast Conference.

Montarbo was named the MVP in the conference's Southern Division, topping a list of six West Valley players on the dream team.

Pitcher Javier Andueza, catcher Jo Jo Quinata, infielder Melvin Souza, outfielder Donovan Minero and designated hitter David Dudley were Vikings named to the all-conference squad.

Home runs by Montarbo, Minero and Dudley sparked West Valley to a 13-12, 10-inning win over Merced to send the Vikings to the Northern California Regionals.

Minero had four hits to knock in three runs in the win over Merced, and Montarbo drove in three runs with three hits.

Dudley drove in four runs for the Vikings, and Quinata doubled home a pair. Gary Ferraro added three hits.

Valley lost 16-10 to the College of the Sequoias in the first round of the regionals, despite a four-hit day by Minero.

Minero doubled, tripled and singled twice to drive home five runs for the Vikings. Quinata and Dudley had two hits apiece, and Ferraro knocked in two runs.

Andueza was stuck with the pitching loss, dropping his record to 10-4.

The Vikings slipped to 30-16 for the year.

    Holy City Race

    NASCAR at Home Depot

NASCAR auto racing is coming to local Home Depot stores when a state-of-the-art mobile unit outfitted with a racing simulator rolls into the area this month.

The simulator, modeled after the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Pontiac that's driven by rookie of the year candidate Tony Stewart, is life-size and true-to-spec. Participants can take the wheel and experience the roar of the engine.

The mobile unit will visit: Milpitas, 1535 Landess Ave., on June 9, 3-7 p.m.; San Jose, 920 Blossom Hill Road, on June 10, 3-7 p.m.; Santa Clara, 2435 Lafayette, on June 13, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; and Sunnyvale, 680 Kifer Road, on June 17, 3-7 p.m.
