    CUSD receives award

After working since October on individual research projects, six eighth-grade students from the Campbell Union School District will be awarded the Chartrand Award of Excellence for Eighth Grade Exhibitions.

Each of the six students--two from each of the three middle schools--will receive an engraved plaque at the graduation ceremony on June 21, in recognition of their hard work. Marla Olszewski, communications specialist for the district, said every eighth-grade student chooses a topic to research, plans a timeline, does research and writes a research paper. All students must also prepare a presentation of their projects, using at least two forms of media.

On May 25, all eighth-grade students presented their projects to a panel of judges. Olszewski said each school then chooses two students to receive the award. She said each school has its own way of determining the winners.

Olszewski said the projects cover a wide range of topics, and all students must also interview people as part of their research. One student chose the Holocaust for his project, with a Holocaust survivor as a mentor. Another student compared the methods used to train dogs and dolphins. An aspiring screenwriter studied Shakespeare's plays and wrote her own version of a modern-day Shakespearean play, having her friends perform her script on videotape. An aspiring novelist interviewed an author and created a recipe for writing a novel, writing his own in the process. Another student studied the history of space flight in America, following her interest in becoming an astronaut.

This is the second year the Chartrand award has been given. The award is named for former Associate Superintendent Gerry Chartrand.

This year's winners are Amy Pombo and Michael Reinken from Campbell Middle School, Ryan Hunsaker and Mary Pagendarm from Monroe Middle School and Jenna Ray and Trevor Davis from Rolling Hills Middle School.
