Campbell's JFK University receives a big $150,000 grant

    By Michelle C. Crowe

Campbell may appear to be a quiet little town, but it's also bursting with cutting-edge technology in both private and public educational ventures.

John F. Kennedy University, housed at the former Campbell High School, at 1 W. Campbell Ave., has received a one-time $150,000 grant to continue its efforts to implement environmental sustainability technology at their new "green" campus, as well as integrating cultural diversity throughout its programs. With help from the James Irvine Foundation grant, the new campus in Concord will replace the school's main one in Orinda.

"We've been working hard toward this goal for more than a year, which makes us the first university to build an environmentally sustainable campus from the ground up," says Roni Portillo, marketing coordinator. "Our school's specialties are liberal arts, management, law, psychology, museum studies and holistic studies, which puts this project right in line with our focus. Experiential is a big word here--we believe in hands-on applications of what we teach, whether it's psychology students working at Pleasant Hill Community Counseling Center, Sunnyvale Community Counseling Center and the Center for Transpersonal and Holistic Counseling in Oakland, or museum studies scholars serving as docents with the Ainsley House Museum."

Student requests for increased mind-body-spirit studies have also resulted in the school being the first to offer a master's degree in counseling psychology with an emphasis in holistic studies, as well as organization and sports.

In yet another first, the Campbell Union High School District is installing a wireless network in its six schools. By connecting the district's 8,000 students through this network, students and instructors are no longer confined to using the existing wired buildings to complete Internet research.

The network will allow the students to surf the Internet almost anywhere on the campus, including the library, cafeteria, or even outside the classrooms when things get too hot inside.
