Where have all the little toads gone?

My family and I moved to Campbell four years ago from San Jose. We live off Winchester/Camden Avenue by the percolation ponds. The first year we moved here we were thrilled to find possums, raccoons, rabbits, skunks, lizards and toads in our backyard. We felt like city slickers moving to the country.

One of the most amazing experiences is in the spring--our yard, street and many blocks by the percolation ponds are invaded by hundreds and hundreds of baby toads. The kids would spend days/weeks building tiny toad habitats, studying them and then releasing them. Over the years we have looked forward to this amazing event.

This year, however, the baby toads did not come! I know the percolation ponds were drained at various times of the year. I don't mean to jump to conclusions, but I was wondering if perhaps this was the reason for the toads' absence.

I would appreciate any insight you could offer on why the toads did not come, and what if anything can be done to ensure their return.
