District begins recharge work
The Santa Clara Valley Water District is overseeing construction of an injection well, which will be used to pump water into a deep underground aquifer.
The work, which can be seen along San Tomas Expressway between Campbell and Budd avenues, compensates for the loss of groundwater recharge ponds by the construction of Highway 85.
The injection well allows the district to store water that can be pumped out at a later date. Construction began in April and is slated for completion in September. The cost of the project is $559,000. When the project is completed, it will allow the district to store 660 acre-feet, or more than 215 million gallons of water.
Sherman Oaks is charter school
After performing a rousing rendition of 'N Sync's "Bye, Bye, Bye" in honor of the outgoing administration--Chartrand, Superintendent Marcia Plumleigh, Deputy Superintendent Dick McCann and Board President Lois Adams--Sherman Oaks Elementary principal Peggy Bryan and staff were given a plaque for the school's newest endeavor.
The school was officially approved by the State Board of Education as a community charter school. A plaque rededicating Sherman Oaks will hang outside the school. Another plaque indicating the new distinction will hang in the district office.
Campbell students honored for work
Four students received awards for their work on their eighth-grade exhibition projects at the Campbell Governing Board meeting on June 22.
Campbell Middle School's Chris Phi, Monroe Middle School's Cody Gordon and Melissa Giles, and Ali Rakhshanifar of Rolling Hills were honored with the first annual Gerry Chartrand Award of Excellence.
The award is named after outgoing Associate Superintendent Gerry Chartrand, who was instrumental in establishing the eighth-grade exhibition project, which is a mandatory graduation requirement for all Campbell Union School District middle-schoolers. Chartrand announced her resignation earlier this year.
At the beginning of the 1999-2000 academic year, eighth-graders chose a topic, wrote a research paper and demonstrated that project in front of a panel of judges. The four students have their names engraved in a plaque in the district office.
