Talk of the Town
By Sarah Gaffney
Q. Recently President Clinton announced that the U.S. government will have a $1 trillion surplus this year. How should the excess money be spent? Follow-up: If you won the lottery tomorrow, how would you spend the jackpot?

Social security and feeding people. We need to help the elderly and help the hungry. But, I believe that we've always been in debt and we will always be in debt. That's my opinion about the whole thing. Cash prize? I would help my children and grandchildren financially. I'd help buy them an education and homes. I wouldn't spend any of it on myself. We're very fortunate. I have enough. Of course I'd give some to charity, too.

That money needs to go to Medicare and MediCal and every other thing pertaining to the poorer people in this country. Social Security should definitely get a part of it, too. Mucho moolah? Pay my bills, number one and move, number two. Probably up to Everett, Washington where my son and daughter live. I'd go to Seattle and live there for a couple of months and see everything. Then I'd take a trip and ride every roller coaster in the U.S.

I think that we should try to save Social Security and I think we need to take care of babies and old people in this country. They need that money. And just as important is MediCal. Lotta loot? We've got daughters. One needs a house and the other one would like her bills paid off. That's all we think about is our kids. Our girls are very important. In last night's drawing I got my five bucks back. That's good enough for me.

Help the senior citizens. I live in a senior citizen building. There's only central heating and air conditioning in the hallways but not in our apartments. It's not very comfortable that way. Maybe with more money, they could give us a better system. Big win? I would give half of it to my children. Give it to the children 'cause they need it ... they have kids. That's what I would do with it. The other half I'd use to take care of my debts and my bills. And maybe put some away to take care of me.
