Campbell preparing to celebrate, be featured in local events

    By Michelle C. Crowe

Given the current economic climate, it's fortunate for Campbell businesses that August abounds with opportunities to solidify internal and external relationships.

The Campbell Chamber of Commerce holds its 37th annual golf tournament on Thursday, Aug. 2, at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose. The foursome price is $700 ($175 per golfer) and includes lunch, golf and dinner. Kudos to the owners of Abby's, Alie's, Capers, Hawgs, Mama Mia's, Mio Vicino and Outback Steakhouse, who all donated gift certificates for prizes. Contact 378.6252 to sign up.

"Golf is the unofficial sport of business," affirms Berkeley-based golf guru Suzanne Woo of BizGolfDynamic, who encourages even amateurs to play.

Another great team-building event is the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17 and 18. Both the Downtown Campbell Business Association and the Campbell Chamber of Commerce (the Cancer Crushers of Campbell) have already signed up teams. Chamber executive director Betty Deal reports their team's goal is to raise $100,000.

For the second year, the event will be held at the Campbell Community Center. The registration fee is $100, and participants are asked to raise a minimum of $100 each in pledges. The emphasis is on perseverance, not speed--just like the fight against cancer. The event opens at 6 p.m. Friday evening, followed by the Cancer Survivor Lap at 6:15 p.m., and ends at 11 a.m. Saturday.

"We particularly welcome all cancer survivors, their families and friends to join us for the Survivor Lap," said ACS's Marketing Communications Director Angie Carrillo. The ACS's Silicon Valley and Central Coast Region office is located in Campbell at 1715 S. Bascom Ave., near Hamilton Avenue.

Anyone can purchase a $5 luminaria to be dedicated to a cancer survivor or victim. During the luminaria laps, those dedications will be announced over the loudspeaker.

"We have 19 teams signed up, but there are still lots of opportunities for businesses. My one wish would be for dermatologists to staff the entire event for on-site skin cancer screenings,"said Kelly Duvall, event specialist. Contact 408.879.1032 for more information.
