    Talk of the Town

    By Sarah Gaffney

    Q. Cellular phones are everywhere nowadays, but there still doesn't seem to be a universal cell phone etiquette. Where and when is using a cell phone unacceptable? Follow-up: What is the one driving habit that makes your blood curdle?

Well, when I'm at the register at Noah's Bagels taking somebody's order and they just go on their cellular phone. I think it's kinda rude that I'm taking their order and they're on their cellular phone talking. They're usually just simple phone calls. Nothing important. Bad habit? When they do crazy stuff like try to cut lanes. Or when I'm driving and they just swerve in front of me and I have to slow down real fast so that they can get into another lane or make a turn.

I would say in a place where people are there to be entertained, like restaurants. I know tennis matches are really not very popular for cell phones. They interrupt the quiet of the play. It's always a problem when you watch the international and the top matches. Ditzy driving? Following too close. I don't have a technique to prevent it ... just slowing down I guess.

I use a cell phone a lot so I may be indicting myself. Where and when are cell phones inappropriate? I don't know, in church? I would say when you're driving, but I do that myself. If you talk on a cell phone in a car you should have to use a headset. Rude motoring? Do I have to pick just one? People who don't signal. People who know they have to merge but they speed to the front to merge rather than merging where they're supposed to. I'm guilty of that, I'm sure.

In the movie theater. When the phone rings and they talk. You can't really do anything except give them a dirty look, although it doesn't really work. People don't realize that it bothers other people around them. Heinous habits? No indicators. I can't stand that. People who merge without using an indicator. It's just an accident waiting to happen.
