More coming to help care for animals in Campbell area

American Cancer Society Relay for Life coming to town Aug. 17

    By Michelle C. Crowe

Campbell's PetsMart store isn't the city's only pet-related business to be helping its four-legged customers. Butchie's at 4177 Hamilton Ave. also has a long-standing history of helping out the Humane Society, PetNetwork and Companion Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.) over the past 13 years that Susan and Joe Polito have owned the pet supplies store.

"We've been working with a variety of rescue centers almost since we started, particularly in donating products that are unsalable [due to aesthetics, not quality]," says Susan Polito. "C.A.R.E. seems to be our biggest receiver, as it's so easy; I just call, and they come pick up the items right away."

Although the store does not sell pets, it does post lost and adoptable pet notices. In addition, they've just begun showcasing an adult cat from C.A.R.E., who will live in the store for a two-week period, with C.A.R.E. volunteers coming in daily to provide care.

"Eighteen months after opening our second store in Santa Clara three years ago, we expanded the Campbell store so we now have room to showcase special pets," says Susan. "The location is up front, where both the public and employees can see the adult cat featured. There's always lots of interest in kittens, but adult cats are the hardest to place. Nothing like seeing an animal in person to win someone's heart."

"It seems older and/or abused pets soon find a home once people have seen their picture, and people are even more responsive to seeing an animal in person. I think it will work out well for the animal, the organization, and the customers shopping at our store," she adds.

On a separate good deeds front, there's still time to sign up for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17 and 18 at the Campbell Community Center, reports ACS's marketing communications director Angie Carrillo. The ACS's Silicon Valley and Central Coast Region office is located in Campbell at 1715 S. Bascom Ave., near Hamilton Avenue. Call 408.879.1032 for more information.
