Strong showing for Campbell
Little League all-stars play well in District 44
By Dick Sparrer
The West's four best teams will battle it out this week in San Bernadino at the Western Regionals, the winner to advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
But the Little League baseball season is over in our area, at least for the 2000 season.
The Campbell Little League all-stars put together a valiant effort, but came up a couple of games short of reaching the finals in the District 44 tournament.
Campbell reached the quarterfinal round of the loser's bracket, only to face elimination after a tough loss to Cupertino National.
The Campbell kids faced the tough slate of the loser's bracket after losing a 3-2 heartbreaker to Santa Clara's Briarwood-El Camino all-stars in the first round of the tourney.
But Campbell battled back in impressive fashion with wins over Sunnyvale Southern and Los Altos to remain as just one of six teams left alive in the 14-team field heading into the loser's bracket quarterfinals.
Campbell lost to Cupertino National, though, and National lost a game later to also face elimination.
Members of the Campbell Little League major division all-star team included Jeffrey Coggan and Kelly Peterson of TGFS; Nicholas Dovedot of Murdick Trucking; Pavel Gantvarg and Eric Jurgensen of EPS; Addison Groo, Brett Helmonds and Bryon Wolf of Robins; D.J. Jackman and Nicholas Twitchell of Campbell Plaza; Ronald Rose of Moose Lodge; and Thomas Sabo of RBI. The club's manager was Mike Wolf of Robins and his coaches were Rick Helmonds of Robins and Bob Espinosa of Campbell Plaza.
The Campbell 9-10 year old all-stars tied for sixth in the 15-team District 44 tournament. The Campbell kids made it to the quarterfinal round of the loser's bracket before losing 10-6 to Sunnyvale Southern to face elimination.
Campbell had opened the tourney with an 11-1 win over Los Altos, but lost a tough 8-6 decision to Cupertino National a game later. National went on to place second in the tourney.
Campbell fought through the loser's bracket with back-to-back wins over Cupertino American (9-5) and Moreland (6-5) before losing to Southern.
Members of the Campbell Little League 9-10 all-star team included Andrew Formale of Royal Brass; Jordan Groo and James McCririe of Robins; Kevin Kephart of EPS; Michael Lang of Woodworks; Max Rao of Murdick Trucking; Jeffrey Sawyer and Ryan Van Amburg of Willow Glen; Shiloh Stephens of Moose Lodge; Hayden Shirley and Trevor Vlay of Campbell Plaza; and Nic Wightman of TGFS.
