Talk of the Town
By Sarah Gaffney
Q. The Mercury News recently reported that Saturdays have died and become just another day of work and running errands. What's your favorite way to spend a Saturday? Follow-up: What's your least favorite weekend chore or errand?

I like to go walking and window shopping. I live in Tokyo and usually have to work on Saturdays. But on Sundays I'm free to do what I want. Gruesome chore? Housekeeping. Cleaning up and cooking. I like cooking, but I have to do a week's worth of it. I don't like cleaning the bathtub, either. I like washing the dishes. But I ask my husband to clean the bathtub.

If the weather permits I go down to the pool. Then there's the exercise room and the golf course. I'd rather do these things than have to go grocery shopping and pick up the laundry. Despised errand? Grocery shopping. I hate to grocery shop. You go, you buy all these groceries, you put them in the car, you take them home, you take them all out, you have to put them all away, you eat them all up and you know what happens after that.

It all depends on what kind of weather it is. If it's a rainy day, I like to sit inside and watch a movie. If it's sunny, I like to either be outside in the garden reading a book or just relaxing. Go to the beach, go to the park. Tedious task? The grocery store and doing laundry. I hate having to wait in line and spending money and then coming home and having to put it all away. I'd rather be outside pulling weeds. I'd clean a thousand bathrooms before doing my laundry.

Playing roller hockey. I try to play every Saturday. I know what Saturdays are all about. I don't know what this "Saturdays are dead" crap is. I don't buy it. Hated obligation? I hate having to go out and buy toiletries like shaving cream and contact lens stuff. I always seem to run out because I can never inspire myself go do it. There's nothing exciting about it. I buy it in bulk when I can get my mom to go do it for me.
