Missing the sweet old apricot trees

I'm an old prune picker who likes to complain. This time I want to express my disappointment about the removal of the beautiful apricot trees next to the parking lot in front of the Campbell Historical Museum. I went there to hear the summer concert three weeks ago, and I saw how those two dear little trees, which were memories of the past and brought a smile to my face, had been removed. I asked Museum Director Bob Peretti what happened to them, and he said they had blite. The truth is that fruit trees don't get blite and even so they could have been sprayed.

These trigger-happy builders want to demolish every reminder of the past for us old timers that is left. Couldn't they wait until we're gone? They tear down and change as if we never existed and it hurts a little.

    Campbell's changing face saddens resident

Art Schefler's letter in your Aug. 1 opinion page was right on. I live in west San Jose, near Campbell and go there quite a bit. Campbell is a refuge from the insanity of San Jose. But as Schefler said, it is being destroyed. Here's what I fear will happen next to Campbell.

First, parking meters will be installed. It already has that ridiculous two-hour parking. Maybe it can have the meters for one hour. The fee should be at least 50 cents for 20 minutes.

Second, it must have traffic lights on Campbell Avenue to be "modern." Those four-way stops, which serve a good purpose, must go. After all, you can't have a city without a maximum of traffic lights.

Third, it must have a freeway between 85 and 280 with a massive interchange in downtown Campbell.

These are items to supplement Schefler's comments.
