Ellen Levy Finch's dog, Jake, reminds me why I don't drink coffee: excessive artificial energy. Jake, however--a "semi-dachshund"--is naturally buzzed: He pants frantically, wags his tail and obediently--and incessantly--retrieves a squeaking football toy covered with porcupine-like quills. Finch's other dog, Remington, whom Finch describes as a "squirrelhund," is the kind of canine who's curious about strangers and is eager to please, but nevertheless is just as content stretched out in the shade of the trees. But, if there's food involved, Remington will do anything: jump through tires, wiggle through tunnels and tramp across a teeter-totter. Both dogs' personalities meet the prerequisite of boundless enthusiasm that is required for one of the fastest-growing dog sports in the United States: dog agility.
