    Animal Instincts

Thank you for your coverage of Assemblywoman Elaine Alquist's AB 1482 ("South Bay cities get one-year reprieve with new law," July 28), which was signed by Gov. Davis on July 12, to give shelters a year to meet increased holding times mandated by SB 1785. The article says the bill "ticks off animal rights groups." In fact, AB 1482 was much more supported than opposed by animal groups, the Fund for Animals among them. Others included the Humane Society of the U.S., the state Humane Association, PAW PAC, many county humane societies and animal rights groups. Even Bob Barker of The Price Is Right urged Davis to sign AB 1482!

Animal advocates all over the state are grateful to Assemblywoman Alquist. Not only did she meet the needs of her district, including the Humane Society of Santa Clara, but she listened and responded to the other counties and their shelters that faced the same problems of canceled contracts, overcrowded kennels/cages, and the tragic killing of adoptable animals for lack of space. AB 1482 will keep shelter doors open to thousands of homeless animals.
