Exploring the past in Campbell Museum

On Sept. 13, the Campbell Historical Museum will open several new exhibits to the public. The exhibits will take a look at the evolution of Campbell from when Ohlone Native Americans lived here, up until the present.

The four themes of the exhibits, which feature artifacts and memorabilia, include: a general store, the vanishing of canneries, adult recreation and kitchen appliances.

Museum guests are encouraged to handle artifacts and reproductions featured in the "please touch" section of the exhibit. This includes a copy of a young Campbell woman's diary, an 1898 Sears catalog and testing an Ohlone drill with a shell.

In the general store, visitors will learn about the three major stores that acted as Campbell's community centers. The exhibit features items donated from families as they closed their stores, such as food items. The kitchen appliance exhibit features tools used in food preparation from the 1700s through 1950s. The exhibit displays items from a 1700's Ohlone grinding stone to a 1950's chrome percolator.

In place of last year's "toys and games" exhibit is "adult recreation." Adult hobbies and pastimes include doll houses, miniature collecting, needle point and chainless bicycles for ladies to ride while wearing a skirt. The vanishing canneries exhibit describes the history of canneries in Campbell. Guests can handle cannery tools and see how many peaches they can get into a can compared to cannery professionals.

The public is welcome to visit the museum, located in historic downtown Campbell, 51 North Central Ave. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors, $2.50 for youth (ages 7-17) and free for those under 7 years old. Call 408.866.2119 for information or go to www.ci.campbell.ca.us on the web.
