    Campbell center offers gardening

The University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners plans to teach a series of adult classes at the Campbell Community Center. Beginning Gardening will meet every Tuesday from Sept. 25 to Oct. 30, 6:30-9 p.m. It will include introductions to soils, compost, planning gardens, selecting the correct plants, vegetable gardening, seed starting and more.

Intermediate Gardening will meet every Tuesday and runs from Jan. 22 to Feb. 26. Topics will include irrigation, landscape trees and shrubs, summer bulbs, home orchards and summer vegetable gardening.

Classes cost $62 including all materials and supplies. Classes will be taught by master gardeners and local professionals. The community center is not accepting telephone reservations for classes until Sept. 12. To sign up, call 408.866.2104.

    Coastal cleanup needs volunteers

Volunteers are needed for California Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at three sites in the West Valley: Los Gatos Creek Park from Camden Avenue to Lark Avenue in Campbell; Leniham Dam at Lexington Reservoir in Los Gatos; and Calabazas Creek and Prospect Creek at Via Reoneole in Saratoga.

The cleanup will remove trash and other debris dumped in local waterways to help keep the water flowing smoothly and protect water quality and the habitat of the plants and animals that live in the creeks. Last year's Cleanup Day drew 1,045 volunteers, who pulled more than 35,000 pounds of trash from county waterways.

Volunteers should wear long pants, sturdy shoes, gloves and sunscreen. Participants will receive a recognition item and pollution prevention materials from the West Valley Clean Water Program.
