City to choose artist to design garage

Campbell Public Works employee Zarka Popovic says the city received "23 incredible submissions" from artists all over the United States interested in designing, fabricating and installing public art for the three-story civic garage that will be built on Campbell Avenue. The garage is scheduled for completion in July 2002. Popovic says the city narrowed the list down to four candidates and finished its interviews during the last week of August. The next step is to have the city council approve spending the money, approximately $40,000, to hire the chosen artist. The approval should come sometime in October or November, Popovic says.

    Light-rail meeting informs citizens

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is hosting an informational open house Sept. 12, 6-8 p.m. in the Mary Campbell Room at the Campbell Community Center, 1 W. Campbell Ave. Staff from the authority's Community Outreach, Community Oriented Design Enhancements, Customer Service, and Real Estate and Rail Design and Construction will be available to speak one on one with the public. A VTA spokesman said there is nothing new to report as far as developments with the proposed aerial bridge over Hamilton Avenue is concerned. The bridge will affect residents who live in Campbell and San Jose because some may be able to see it from their homes. Some residents who live in these areas lodged complaints with VTA staff at meetings held in late July.
