Fraternal agencies decreasing because of big government growth, involvement

About your Aug. 29 cover story explaining why fraternal organizations in the Bay Area are losing membership during the past several years, I offer another perspective as to why this is happening: the rise of government.

Government has grown because these fraternal/private organizations have decreased their service to the community.

If fraternal/private organizations do not serve the community, then government will step in and meet the need.

I offer a suggestion that may help fraternal/private organizations to increase their membership. Search your own records and see what your Founding Fathers did in the beginning, which was to seek the lost, help the poor and heal the brokenhearted. Do this and you will become well-known, and people may say, "I want to be like you."
