Businesses in Campbell help after Sept. 11 terrorist acts

    By Michelle C. Crowe

As the nation mourns the loss of life and livelihood in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, numerous local organizations are working to aid in the recovery effort. Campbell neighbor--and former resident--eBay Inc., 2145 Hamilton Ave., has just launched a $100 million-in-100-days campaign to raise money for relief. Now is the time for retailers, business owners and individuals to clear out their warehouses and help contribute to the "September 11th Fund" by selling, buying or donating directly to the cause.

EBay and eBay Online Payments will waive 100 percent of all related listing, final value and processing fees to maximize participation. In an unprecedented move, eBay Online Payments, VISA, MasterCard, Wells Fargo and Discover have united to offer fee-free transaction processing online during this event. One piece of good news is that post-tragedy reports of price gouging and panic buys of gasoline have been found to be without merit. "The horrific events had nothing to do with oil or gasoline supplies. Any concerns regarding gasoline shortages are artificial and rumor-driven," said California State Automobile Association spokesman Atle Erlingsson. "Prices remained stable over the [first] 24 hours, and we expect that trend to continue."

Pride in the United States is evident by the numerous displays of flags and red, white and blue on retail centers and businesses from San Tomas Plaza to The Pruneyard. The city of Campbell has flags prominently displayed at both ends of town; the stock of American flags at Walgreen's has been continuously depleted; and tattoo parlors such as downtown's Gothic Professional Body Piercing are embellishing an increased number of clients with the American flag, as well as integrating flag motifs, patriotic colors and sayings into existing designs.

Anyone requiring grief counseling may request assistance from the nonprofit Centre for Living with Dying in Santa Clara, 408.980.9801, or download online brochures such as Tools for Coping and Living with Daily Trauma from www.thecentre.org.
