Warriors have high hopes
The league season hasn't started out exactly the way Westmont girls volleyball coach John Haroun had hoped.
The Warriors have opened the season in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League with back-to-back losses to Branham and Overfelt.
Still, Haroun is looking for the Warriors to finish among the top three in the division this fall, and there are five senior returners who he figures will lead the Westmont attack this year.
Ashley Carrothers, a 5-foot-10 middle blocker, is a top senior returner for the Warriors along with Megan Rogers, Stefani Carver, Deanna Fillhover and DeAnna Negrete.
Juniors Jessica Posmoga, Christine Barbin, Hilary Collins and Nicole Harmer join sophomore Megan Merill as other key players for Westmont.
Kathryn Obermeyer and Andrea Conley are a pair of freshman prospects on the Westmont varsity.
The Warriors lost 12-15, 15-12, 15-8, 16-14 to Overfelt last week despite getting 11 kills from Carrothers. Westmont lost 15-2, 15-11, 15-5 to Branham earlier in the week.
The Warriors, now 2-5 for the year and 0-2 in division play, will try to get on the winning track this week when they visit Silver Creek on Sept. 25 and host Santa Teresa on Sept. 27, 5 p.m. Westmont will head to the Carmichael Tournament this weekend.
West Valley wins
Sophomore quarterback David Macchi (Willow Glen) threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the West Valley Community College football team to a rousing 63-28 win over Diablo Valley College in Coast Conference play last Friday afternoon in Saratoga.
Macchi tossed a couple of TD passes to Brian Davis (Pioneer) for 14 and 13 yards, and he hit Kevin Gray (Pioneer) with a 48-yard scoring toss. Macchi also ran 26 yards for a West Valley touchdown in the second quarter and snuck over from the one for a TD in the final period.
The win was the first of the year for the Vikings. They will take their 1-2 season record up against the College of the Sequoias on Sept. 28 in a 3 p.m. game at the West Valley campus in Saratoga.
Agoos Bobblehead
The first 10,000 fans to arrive at Spartan Stadium for the playoff soccer game between the San Jose Earthquakes and the Columbus Crew will receive a free Jeff Agoos Bobblehead Doll. The game begins at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26.
