Chamber of Commerce welcomes new businesses

    By Michelle C. Crowe

Although the nation continues to mourn the personal and property devastation of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, most local businesses are following President Bush's request to get back to business--as much as possible. A caveat to well-intentioned donors: Beware of unscrupulous pseudo-charities whose only beneficiaries are their creators. Check out www.epublic eye.com, and then click on "Disaster Relief Scams" for details. Note that no reputable organizations are currently calling individuals or businesses to solicit support.

Campbell Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Betty Deal mentioned that the Salvation Army has been feeding nearly 100,000 people daily and has been slightly overlooked in many media outlets. The chamber also welcomes several new Campbell businesses as members: public relations firm DGPR Inc., custom design and fabrication company Gimix Inc. and attorney Jeffrey H. Wong.

Campbell businesses accounted for four of the 50 top women-owned businesses in the Bay Area, according to the Washington state-based National Association of Women Business Owners. Congratulations to Janice Berthold of All West Insurance Brokers; Susan Rutherford of Rutherford Bolen Group; Nicki Riedel of Black & White Design, and Marilyn Laughlin of LMS Heating & Cooling.

October is often referred to as women's month, as it includes both Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Battered & Abused Women's Awareness Month. Even in the midst of tragedy, it's important to remember and support these other worthwhile causes that affect thousands of people in the Bay Area.

On a more pleasant note, the city of Campbell invites canines of all ages and sizes on Oct. 14 to the Companion Animal Rescue Effort's Canine Family Walk. Check-in starts at 8 a.m. at the Campbell Par Course, at the corner of Campbell and Gilman avenues, and both two- and four-legged participants are welcome. Just remember that all dogs must arrive with proof in paw of their rabies and six-in-one vaccines. All walk-a-thon funds support the nonprofit organization's efforts to spay and neuter homeless animals and then find them permanent loving homes.
