    Volunteers needed for Read-a-Thon

    The Campbell and Saratoga libraries are participating in the third annual Teen Read Week on Oct. 15-21, by sponsoring a Read-a-thon at the Saratoga Library on Oct. 14, from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. During the Read-a-thon, local teens will read stories, picture books and poems to children from preschool to fifth grade.

    Volunteer service hours will be offered for teen readers. For more information and to register to be a teen reader, call the Saratoga Community Library at 408.867.6127 and ask for the teen librarian.

    Children's author addresses Club

    Emmy Award-winning writer Sindy McKay, author of We Both Read, a series of children's books, and Jim Henson's Muppet Babies, will be the guest speaker at the October meeting of the California Writer's Club.

    McKay grew up in Santa Clara Valley and attended Campbell High School. She currently lives in Southern California.

    She has worked as an animated screenwriter for Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Universal and Film Roman Studios. She is presently the story editor for Clifford the Big Red Dog, a new preschool series featuring the classic character, which began this fall and is now airing on the Fox Family Channel.

    The California Writer's Club meets on Oct. 11, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Hometown Buffet, 2670 El Camino Real, Santa Clara. Cost is $11 for members, $16 for non-members. For more information, call 408.253.2091.

    Pumpkin Patch benefit is Oct. 7

    The San Jose Auxiliary to Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital will host the 28th annual Pumpkin Patch Boutique from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 7, at the First Congregational Church at Hamilton and Leigh avenues in San Jose.

    All proceeds benefit patients and families at the hospital. Auxiliary members have spent months gathering donations for the boutique, and the resulting collection of gifts, crafts, baked goods, plants and more for purchase.

    Admission to the Pumpkin Patch Boutique is $2. For $7 more, guests can enjoy lunch, that will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Raffle tickets will also be available, with prizes including a Willow Glen shopping spree, a Lake Tahoe vacation and San Jose Sharks collectibles.

    Voter registration due by midnight on Oct. 10

    Oct. 10 is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 7 election. Registration forms are available at libraries, post offices, fire stations, government offices and other locations. Completed forms are due by midnight on Oct. 10, at the Office of the Registrar of Voters, 1555 Berger Dr., Building 2, in San Jose.
