No quit in Warriors
Del Mar, Prospect push to 4-0 records
By Dick Sparrer
It was more than 38 minutes into the game before A.J. Oxley finally gave the Westmont crowd something to cheer about when the Warriors opened up the league season against Pioneer last Friday night.
But once Oxley got the Westmont fans going, they weren't about ready to stop.
The Westmont crowd had been sitting by quietly as Pioneer ran up a 34-0 lead by the half. Then, after a scoreless third period, Oxley got things going early in the fourth.
Westmont took over at the Pioneer 42 three plays into the fourth quarter, and three incomplete passes later the Warriors faced a fourth-and-10 from that 42.
But junior quarterback Cris Snyder found tight end Ben Holmes for 17 yards and a key first down. A play later, Oxley was racing to the end zone on a 24-yard touchdown run.
Key defensive plays by Mike Hilbert, Marc Derendinger and Jose Blanco forced the Mustangs to turn the ball over on downs at the Westmont 17 later in the period, and the Westmont offense went back to work.
Snyder hit Adam Antolin for 14 yards, then Tony Oka broke free for a 69-yard touchdown run. Snyder tossed to Holmes for the two-point conversion, and the Warriors trailed 34-14.
Westmont failed to recover on the onside kickoff attempt, but the Warriors stopped the Mustangs cold on four plays thanks to tackles by Derendinger, Dan Moredock and Dave Horner to take over at the Westmont 49 with just 39 seconds left in the game.
But there was no quit in the Warriors last Friday night. Snyder tossed to Oxley for 17 yards and a penalty pushed the football to the Pioneer 19.
After two errant passes, Oxley tossed 19 yards to Antolin for a touchdown on the final play of the game.
It was too little, too late for the Warriors, but Westmont coaches had to be pleased with the never-say-die attitude of their players.
Snyder, making his first start at quarterback, completed 10 of 22 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown. Holmes pulled in four tosses for 88 yards, and Antolin snagged four tosses for 73 yards and the TD. Oxley had a catch for 17 yards and Hilbert had a grab for two yards.
Oka finished as the ground leader with 68 yards on three carries. Oxley added 26 yards on four tries and Hilbert picked up 20 yards on seven attempts.
Blanco led all Westmont tacklers with six stops and Holmes got in on five. Oka, Horner, Derendinger, Billy Stouffer and Dustin Sedegren were in on four tackles each, and Hilbert, Tony LaVista and Chad Sisemore were in on three each.
Antolin, Branden Mazikowski, Jon Lowe, Ervin Gonzalez, Joe Martin, Oxley, J.D. Collins, Josh Washington, Aaron Goldsmith, Blake Barr, Jason Kennedy and Moredock were others in on tackles for Westmont.
The Warriors, now 0-4, will be gunning for their first league win on Oct. 8, 7 p.m., when they visit Piedmont Hills.
Dons top Pirates
Del Mar opened the Santa Teresa Division season with a 23-13 upset win over Piedmont Hills.
Piedmont and Willow Glen were named as the preseason title favorites in the division, but both lost in the first week of the league season. The Rams fell 21-7 to Prospect, and the Pirates dropped the 23-13 nod to Del Mar.
Junior quarterback Jason Campbell helped the Dons jump out to the early lead with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Reuben Mastin in the first period.
But Piedmont answered with a TD before the end of the first quarter, then scored again in the second to take a 13-6 lead.
It was a lead that wouldn't hold up for long. Following Piedmont's second TD, senior speedster Vu Nguyen ran back the kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and Ted Perry kicked the extra point to tie the game 13-13 at intermission.
Perry drilled a 32-yard field goal in the third period and the Dons recovered a fumble in the end zone in the fourth to close out the scoring.
Junior defensive back Chris McSwain picked off a Piedmont Hills pass in the end zone in the final quarter to help the Dons secure the victory.
Linebacker Cody Sampson and defensive ends Andrew Sanchez and Nick Salvador were all defensive standouts for the Dons in the victory.
The Dons, 0-9-1 a year ago, are off to a 4-0 start this fall. They'll take a break from league play this week when they host Mission San Jose on Oct. 8, 7:30 p.m., in a nonleague game at Westmont.
Panthers win
Prospect came through a big win in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL last Friday afternoon, beating top-rated Willow Glen 21-7.
The Panthers, coming off a 1-8-1 season a year ago, pushed their '99 record to 4-0 with the thrilling come-from-behind win over the Rams.
Willow Glen scored first when veteran quarterback David Macchi tossed 41 yards to Will Rideau.
But the Rams didn't hold the 7-0 lead for long. Prospect tied the game before the half when Saladin Washington shot over from the 4 for the touchdown and Andrew Heling kicked the extra point.
The clubs were locked in a 7-7 tie at the half, but the Panthers snapped the tie in the third quarter when Washington ran one in from the 8-yard line. Heling's second kick made it 14-7.
Heling helped the Panthers put the game away in the fourth period when he hauled in an 83-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Williams. Heling converted to make the final score 21-7.
Williams had a big day for the Panthers, completing 10 of 12 passes for 210 yards and the one touchdown. Washington led the ground show with 83 yards.
Prospect will take its 4-0 record on the road this week to visit Pioneer on Oct. 9, 1:30 p.m. The Mustangs are 2-2 after their win over Westmont last Friday night.
