Havner, Bekele star for Del Mar
Beverly Havner and Dennis Bekele each came through with solid performances for the Del Mar cross country team when the Dons competed in the large-school division at the Half Moon Bay Invitational last weekend.
Havner breezed over the 2.25-mile course in 15:40 to finish 10th in the girls division, and Bekele ran 12:26 to nail 11th in the boys race at Half Moon Bay.
In dual-meet competition last week, the Dons lost to Mt. Pleasant in boys and girls competition.
Bekele was second overall in 17:05 with Dawit Gezahgn fifth in 17:56 for the Dons in the boys race. Carlos Melchor was seventh in 18:22 with Chris O'Neal 15th in 19:36 on the 2.95-mile course at Montgomery Hill Park.
Havner was 12th in the girls race in 24:09, but the Dons could not field a complete team.
In other local cross country action, Laura Kniskern helped Prospect to a split with Independence and Lick in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League last week.
Kniskern finished second overall in 20:27 to lead the Panthers to a 15-50 sweep against the Comets. Prospect lost a tough 28-30 decision to the 76ers.
Danielle Zelinski was close behind Kniskern for the Panthers, finishing fourth in 21:49.
The same day, the Prospect boys ran to a 23-32 win over Independence, but lost 15-42 to Lick. Frank Ogawa was seventh in 17:59 to lead the Prospect effort. Josh Miner was ninth in 18:19.
Pony League board elections
The Campbell Pony League will hold elections for its board of directors on Nov. 19. The league is looking for candidates for president, vice president and treasurer, and there are also openings in the league for managers and coaches.

Pitching Program
An eight-week fall pitching program for baseball players ages 9-12 will run Tuesday evenings, Oct. 26-Dec. 14, in the gym at West Valley Community College in Saratoga.
The program teaches fundamentals, arm care and defensive skills. Players 9-10 attend at 7 p.m., players 11-12 at 8 p.m.
