Talk of the Town
By Sarah Gaffney
Q. A recent study shows that Californians' diets aren't as healthy or low-fat as one might expect. What conscientious effort do you make to maintain a healthy diet? Follow-up: When you're craving a fast-food meal, what do you eat?

Other than chocolate, I stay away from all fats and still I have rather high cholesterol, which seems strange to me. I think my body just produces cholesterol. Fast feast? I can't say that I crave fast food. I don't eat that much of it. It just doesn't appeal to me. Probably because I come from a generation where there wasn't such a thing as fast food. It just wasn't there. I do like corn chips, though. The spicy ones.

I buy organic fruits and vegetables from Sunflower in Campbell. I eat chicken and turkey, mainly. I stay away from beef and red meat. Naughty craving? Probably a chicken burrito from El Pollo. I don't tend to go to places like Burger King or McDonald's. A piece of fruit is just as good when you want something fast. As a kid we used to get hamburgers at McDonald's but I'm grown up now.

I try to drink a lot of water. I purposely make a conscientious effort every day to drink a lot ... eight to 10 glasses a day minimum. It fills me up and it helps curb my appetite. Drinking lots of water promotes oxygen in your blood and supposedly helps you burn fat more efficiently. Sinful snack? A hamburger from Burger King. A Whopper. I always go without cheese. I like the cheese but it's extra fat that I really won't miss.

I don't have a gall bladder so I can't eat very high-fat foods. It's actually helped me to have a better diet. I always start my day with a good breakfast, make sure I eat lunch and I like to have small bits of food throughout the day so I don't binge at dinner. Bad binge? French fries from McDonald's. Those are my favorite, absolutely. On a splurge I'd order a hamburger, but never anything larger than just their regular cheeseburger and small fries.
