City chooses Washington artists for new garage
Construction to be completed in June
By Erin Mayes
Campbell city officials have chosen an artist team from Spokane, Wash., to design and install art in the downtown parking structure, under construction at the northwest corner of Campbell Avenue and Second Street.
Tom Askman and Lea Anne Lake were chosen from a group of 23 artists and artist teams who responded to a request for qualifications.
City Administrative Analyst Zarka Popovic said the team's experience with brickwork was a major factor in the city's decision, because the garage's facade will be made of bricks.
The community development, redevelopment and public works departments examined each submission and narrowed the selection down to eight submissions.
After reviewing the list for medium, style and prior experience, city officials chose Askman and Lake.
Popovic said Askman, an art professor at Eastern Washington University, has been involved in public art for more than 20 years, and Lake has been doing the same for about 10 years.
City council members voted May 15 to approve a $40,000 allocation for the art project, which Popovic said should start sometime after the garage is completed.
City Project Manager Al Oxanian said the construction is on schedule and should be completed in June or July.
