Chamber has high hopes for this weekend's OktoberFest

    By Michelle C. Crowe

This weekend, Oct. 20 and 21, heralds the sixth annual OktoberFest, put on by the Campbell Chamber of Commerce.

"If we have good weather, which all indications so far point to a pleasant weekend, we expect about 40,000 people," said Chamber Executive Director Betty Deal. "It was warm at the Prune Festival, but we didn't have as large a crowd as we'd hoped for, so we need to make up for it at the OktoberFest."

In addition to the popular beer garden and Nita B's Desserts booths, new attractions for this year include a wine garden sponsored by Nob Hill Grocery Stores and radio station Mix 106.5, a climbing wall at the newly named KinderPlatz (Kiddie Corner), and Stoddard's beer by new Campbell business Stoddard's.

This year also signals the return of The Internationals, the only musical participants to have appeared at the original OktoberFest in Munich, Germany.

Campbellites are advised to remember that four blocks and side streets along Campbell Avenue--Central Avenue through Third Street--will be barricaded against outside traffic from 10 p.m. on Oct 19 until 8 p.m. on Oct. 21. The good news is that the city of Campbell's parking garage, on Civic Center Drive between Second and Third streets, will be open.

On a smaller scale, Capri Elementary School's Fall Festival fundraiser will occur on campus, 850 Chapman Drive, on Oct. 26 from 5 to 8 p.m.

While the PruneYard Shopping Center and the Kirkwood Shopping Center have traditionally held Halloween trick-or-treating events for children, in light of recent world events, planners are still deciding whether to go ahead or pass this year.

On a lighter note, PruneYard officials have opted to re-install the tower's landmark "Peace on Earth" sign.

Business owners seeking support and a venue to express their concerns during this difficult economic period are advised to come to the next Chamber luncheon on Oct. 24 at the Outback Steakhouse at the PruneYard. This month's speaker is Campbell Mayor Matthew Dean; call 408.378.6252 for reservations.
