Oktoberfest takes over Campbell this weekend

    By Melissa Matchak

History and tradition will come to life once again at the sixth annual Campbell Oktoberfest, Oct. 21 and 22, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown historic Campbell, on East Campbell Avenue.

Sponsored by the Campbell Chamber of Commerce, this year's Oktoberfest will feature Spaten Beer--the official beer of Oktoberfest Munich--and Rock Bottom Brewery's Oktoberfest Ale, plus lots of German wine at Der Biergarten, and bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, sweet-and-sour red cabbage and warm apple strudel.

Live entertainment on three stages will include "The Alpiners" on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. and "Edelweiss" on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. on the main stage playing the best German polkas and oompah tunes. On the west stage, there will be live music performed continuously throughout the weekend, including alternative rock, jazz, blues and big band swing. The community stage will feature youth entertainers performing a variety of talents from dance and gymnastics to tae kwon do.

Oktoberfest will also feature arts and crafts booths with handmade items for sale. The Kiddie Korner will have games and rides for kids of all ages. Kids can participate in bounce jumps, face painting, spin art and more. The community nonprofit organizations, such as Campbell Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and the Campbell Education Foundation, will also sponsor food booths.

Oktoberfest can be traced back 188 years to the southern German region of Bavaria, where Bavarian King Joseph Maximilian married Princess Theresa of Saxony. The celebration after the wedding was originally to feature a horse race, but beer drinking quickly took center stage. That activity became tradition and has continued to be a highlight of the festival.

Admission and parking for the Oktoberfest is free. For more information about Oktoberfest, call the Campbell Chamber of Commerce at 408.378.6252.
