Superintendent to be at open house

Campbell Union School District will hold a reception on Nov. 1, to give community members a chance to meet the new superintendent, Johanna Vandermolen.

"We wanted to give local business leaders, civic leaders and parents the opportunity to be introduced to her and her to them," district spokeswoman Marla Olszewski said.

Vandermolen took the helm at CUSD this year, replacing Marsha Plumleigh, who retired last year after 16 years as superintendent. Previously, Vandermolen has worked in almost every position within education, including as a principal, director of curriculum and superintendent.

School Board President John Snelham said Vandermolen is very compatible with the people in the district. "The education of kids came foremost in her mind," he said. "She loves doing what she's doing, and she's ready to step up and run the district."

The reception is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Nov. 1, in the professional development center at Sherman Oaks School. Vandermolen will address the community briefly before mingling with guests. For reservations, RSVP by Oct. 27, to Marla Olszewski at 408.341.7254.

Informational meeting on 1996 Measures A and B

On Oct. 25, VTA will hold an informational open house about Measures A and B, which were passed by voters in the 1996 election.

Measures A and B added a one-half percent sales tax, which is being used for various highway improvement projects. The tax will expire in 2006. However, the city council supports a measure on this year's ballot that would continue the tax for another 30 years.

Between 1996 and 2006, some of the projects supported by the tax are: widening Interstate 880 between North First Street and Montague Expressway; completing the interchange of highways 85 and 87 in South San Jose; and addressing highway noise on Highway 85 in San Jose, Saratoga and Cupertino.

The informal meeting will be held at the Campbell Public Library from 6 to 8 p.m. Models of current highway projects will be on display, and design consultants and VTA staff will be available to answer any questions. This is the third of four meetings, the last of which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 26, at Joy's Utopia in Morgan Hill.
