Campbellites lose a pair of stores, gain one new one

    By Michelle C. Crowe

After what appeared to be an especially good turnout for Campbell's sixth annual Oktoberfest, it's with regret that fast-food fans of wieners must say auf Wiederschein to the Wienerschnitzel at 1380 W. Campbell Ave. Although the world's largest hot-dog chain, with 300 locations in 10 states and Guam, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with multiple promotions and prizes, making a go of it as a franchisee is more difficult financially than ever.

Due to what staff explained as "unreasonable fee increases that would make the store unprofitable or even go in the hole," the owners will not be renewing their contract. The last day of operation will be Nov. 18. Campbell, which until now has boasted as many Wienerschnitzels as Los Angeles, won't have to wait until the next Oktoberfest for its wiener fix--the other two Campbell locations, at 1940 S. Bascom Blvd. and 1330 Camden Ave., will still be operating as usual.

Campbellites also bid farewell to another popular business, the creatively modern custom-furniture retailer known as Ghiasi (formerly Furniture4us.com). Yet unlike many of its counterparts with "Going Out of Business" signs, Ghiasi is experiencing success. The company recently expanded into a gorgeous space at Westfield Shoppingtown Valley Fair (No. 1068 downstairs, next to the Nine West Shoe Store, near Macy's Woman).

In mid-October, Ghiasi also opened a new store in Los Gatos, located at 210 N. Santa Cruz Ave., across the street from Expressions. Fans of the fanciful furnishings should note that both stores are currently offering a two-for-one sale on selected items.

In the used-furniture department, Capt. Barbara Sloane reports that the new 18,000-square-foot Salvation Army Family Store at 1522 S. Winchester Blvd. is currently hiring staff. Candidates should apply in person at the organization's 702 W. Taylor St. store in San Jose. The anticipated opening date is set for Dec. 6, and San Jose District 1 City Councilwoman Linda LeZotte has already confirmed her attendance for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony. Sloane expects additional details to be released in the coming weeks. In the meantime, enjoy a safe and sane Halloween.
