    Americans grateful for others' sacrifices

How fortunate we were to have the New York Police Department and the New York Fire Department. Their bravery and sacrifice is without peer in recent history. Many of them perished in the towers.

How fortunate we are to have the multitudes of rescue workers who risked their lives in hopes that they might rescue but one survivor. Many of them also gave their lives.

How fortunate we are to have the United States military, ready and anxious to risk their lives for our national security. Many of them will go in harms way.

As Americans, the last few weeks have proved just how much we need and value these brave fellow Americans, and just how little we need Berkeley.
