Suspect taken into custody in Berkeley to be charged with murder
Slaying of woman is Campbell's third homicide this year
By Michele Leung
Police still have no motive for the slaying of a woman in Campbell last week. The 37-year-old victim, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was an employee at Campbell Acupuncture, at 69 E. Hamilton Ave. She was found strangled in her car in the rear parking lot of the clinic where she worked on Oct. 25.
Witnesses told police they saw the victim, who was from the Bay Area, and her ex-boyfriend, Yulin Wang of Oakland, arguing in the clinic parking lot about noon on the day she was killed.
Wang, 41, was arrested in Berkeley last Wednesday in connection with the murder. He was booked into the Alameda County Jail and will be transferred back to Santa Clara County Jail sometime this week, according to Campbell Police Chief Dave Gullo, whose department is handling the case. Prosecutors are expected to file criminal charges against Wang early this week, Gullo said Monday. Officials at the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office also declined to give more information on the homicide until the victim's relatives are located.
According to workers at the acupuncture clinic, the victim lived alone and her family resided in China. The clinic has been open for only a month, and employees say they did not know her well.
Wang was arrested without incident in Berkeley at a pay phone. Campbell police say he had made calls to acquaintances with details about the victim's death.
Wang, a Chinese citizen, has no prior criminal history. "He had some kind of relationship with [the victim]," Gullo said.
Police discovered the body after an employee at the acupuncture clinic made a 911 call. Upon arrival, paramedics determined the victim was deceased.
"Our investigation is ongoing," Gullo said. "[We're going] to collect as much evidence as possible and to further determine what was the motive for the case."
The murder is the third homicide this year in Campbell, which police say is abnormally high. "We usually have none, and the unusual thing, given our size, is that we've had three this year," said Gullo. In January, one victim was stabbed to death, and on April 19, Roberto Viramontes, 43, was shot to death in his garage on Palo Santo Drive.
Before this year, a homicide had not occurred in Campbell since 1992.
