Campbell programs in need of donations

    By Michelle C. Crowe

The country may be at war abroad, but here in Campbell, consumers are doing their part to support the economy and worthwhile charities.

Companion Animal Rescue Effort's annual dog walk on Oct. 14 attracted 81 participants (with various four-legged, costumed friends) and 13 sponsors (including the city of Campbell and Butchie's Pet Feed & Supply). The event drew a net of $4,200 for C.A.R.E., which will primarily be used to offset veterinary expenses. The nonprofit works to foster and find homes for homeless animals.

As the holidays draw near, the organization is now into its food drive. Donations of unopened cat and dog food can be dropped off at Butchie's Pet Feed & Supply, 4177 Hamilton Ave. in Campbell or 2098 El Camino Real in Santa Clara.

Local food programs for humans also need to replenish their supplies of dry and canned goods. Second Harvest Food Bank has a convenient drop-off barrel at the Campbell Public Library (now open seven days a week).

"Campbell's sixth annual Oktoberfest was the best we've ever had, with perfect weather, the most participants and the largest crowds," said Betty Deal, executive director of the Campbell Chamber of Commerce. "I was still recuperating through the following weekend. People were looking for a safe place to go. We've always promoted it as a family event, and the public responded with their support. Families arrived at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, and it just got busier throughout the weekend. By Sunday, it was so packed, we couldn't even run the train down Campbell Avenue. That's the kind of problem I don't mind having."

Deal estimated the festival attracted about 45,000 people during the two days. "As far as I can tell, the downtown merchants were pleased," she said. "America's back on track, and we're all doing our part to help the economy in Campbell. Without the support of the volunteers, the city and the merchants, there wouldn't be an Oktoberfest. With all of us working together, we're united and we all have a good time."
