    Vikings roll past Monterey Peninsula

    Heath Ferreira (Valley Christian) ran for two touchdowns to lead the West Valley Community College football team to a 35-21 Coast Conference victory over Monterey Peninsula College last weekend.

    The Vikings opened up a 14-0 lead before intermission when David Jackson scored on a 3-yard run and David Macchi (Willow Glen) pitched a 19-yard scoring pass to Brian Davis (Pioneer). Justin Basanese (Valley Christian) kicked the first two of his five extra points.

    Ferreira scored on a 1-yard run in the third and Eric Spencer-Albert added a 2-yard TD run in the third quarter. Ferreira capped the scoring with an 8-yard scoring run in the fourth.

    The Vikings, now 2-1 in the conference and 5-3 for the year, will take on rival De Anza College Nov. 10, 1 p.m., in Cupertino.

    In other local action, the West Valley College women's soccer team topped Cabrillo 2-1 and Evergreen 2-0 to push their record to 8-2-1 in the Coast Conference and to 14-4-3 for the year.

    In community college women's volleyball play, West Valley improved to 10-0 in conference play with a 30-20, 30-11, 30-16 win over Monterey Peninsula. The Vikings are 13-2 for the year.

    The women's water polo team at West Valley pushed its record to 6-2 in the Coast Conference and to 16-11 for the year with wins over Sacramento City College (12-6) and American River (12-3).

    The West Valley men's water polo squad topped Merced 12-5 to improve to 7-1 in the conference and to 22-4 for the season.

    Locals nominated for Heisman Award

    The Wendy's High School Heisman program honors the nation's top high school student-athletes with awards based on academics, athletics and community service.

    Matea Lisica and Sander Van Der Heide of Prospect, Morgan McGill of Del Mar and Lindsey Sherburne and Matthew Verbrugge of Mitty are among those senior athletes from the area who have been nominated for the honor.

    There will be 12 finalists selected from the national list of nominees with the two national winners claiming the ultimate awards on Dec. 8.

    Masters Swimming

    The West Valley Swim Club offers masters team and lap swimming Monday through Friday, 6-7:30 a.m., and Saturday, 7-8:30 a.m., at Saratoga High School. The cost is $5 per swim. For more information, call 408. 395.5341.
