Original General Plan struck right balance on zoning

Your article on the Campbell Planning Commission hearing on the City General Plan Update was insightful. It highlighted details of a very important, but complex, process going on in our city. I am interested in this both as a resident of Campbell and as a planning commissioner. I would like, however, to clarify a few points made in the article.

This issue was about the character of our neighborhoods. This motion was to keep the zoning on the south side of McGlincey Lane as Light Industrial. My "no" vote was to support changing the zoning to Research and Development. I support the recommendation of the community task force, which spent over a year studying the issue.

The existing businesses would be grandfathered in to ensure that any current business could continue operation for as long as the owners wished. The business could be sold to another person wishing to continue the business, or passed on to heirs, as well. This was very important to me, as I believe very strongly in property rights and support small business. The zone change would require, however, that any new development in the area would have to be of an R&D character.

I strongly believe that the original General Plan update struck the right balance between the needs of the current business owners to continue uninterrupted, the needs of the surrounding neighborhoods, and the long term economic development of Campbell.
