Yard Game: Del Mar running back Eric Bayliss battles for yardage in last Friday's 10-6 win over Prospect.

    Dons win game, lose flip

Zelinski wins trip to the state cross-country meet

Prospect went into the final game of the 2000 football season with just a single thought--upset. The Panthers had just one win in a rather disappointing showing in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

And they would have liked nothing better than to finish the year with an upset victory over Del Mar in the final regular season game for each club.

While the win would have meant little more than bragging rights for the Panthers, a loss would have been devastating for the Dons. Del Mar needed a victory to climb into a three-way tie for second place in the division, and that would mean that the Dons' Central Coast Section playoff hopes would remain alive.

They did... but not for long.

Del Mar beat Prospect 10-6 to finish in a three-way tie for second place with Gunderson and Andrew Hill. The CCS playoff representative would then be decided by a coin flip, and it was Hill winning the toss to move on to the playoffs.

The Dons ended the year at 6-4 after beating the Panthers in the final game of the season.

Senior quarterback Jason Campbell scored on a 1-yard run and Ted Perry kicked an extra point and a 22-yard field goal to lift the Dons to the tight win over the Panthers.

The win left the Dons 4-2 in the division. Prospect was 1-5 in Santa Teresa play and 3-7 for the year.

Westmont finished the year just a notch under the .500 mark after losing 35-0 to Valley Christian last Friday night in a nonleague game.

The Warriors finished the year 4-6 after posting a 2-4 mark in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.

    Girls Tennis

Anna Vugdalic and Megan Clapp of Westmont will be serving it up when the Central Coast Section individual tennis tournament gets under way on Nov. 20 at the Courtside Tennis Club in Los Gatos.

The Westmont pair earned a place in the doubles field with a strong showing in the Blossom Valley Athletic League finals. The Westmont duo of Katherine Bamford and Dana Nguyen are alternates for doubles play.

Singles and doubles play begins at noon on Monday with the quarter-final round to be played later the same day. Winners return to the courts on Nov. 21 for the semifinals at noon, with the first- and third-place matches to follow the same day at Courtside.

In the CCS team tournament, Prospect lost its opener 7-0 to Gunn to wrap up the year at 15-3.

    Cross Country

Prospect's Danielle Zelinski won a state trip by finishing in the top 10 in the CCS Division III girls finals held last Saturday at Crystal Springs in Belmont.

The Prospect junior covered the 2.95-mile course in 19:21 to finish eighth in the division and claim a berth in the state meet set for Nov. 25 at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Zelinski's effort sparked Prospect to an 11th-place team finish at CCS. Junior Michelle Holleran was 71st in 23:46 with Nicole Sterns 77th, Edina Hamulic 78th and Natasha Flowers 79th.

Prospect senior Josh Miner finished 67th overall in 18:21 in the boys Division III finals, and junior Kevin Willis led all Westmont finishers in Division II, running 17:36 to claim 57th overall.

In girls Division II competition, Westmont freshman Jessie Heusser was 96th in 23:20.

    Girls Volleyball

Prospect ended the season with a loss to Mountain View at the CCS Division III girls volleyball tournament.

The Panthers, 11-16 for the year, lost 15-13, 15-10, 15-13 to the Spartans in the first round of the playoffs. Sara Gillespie hammed 11 kills, but it wasn't enough for the Panthers.

Gillespie and Cassie Gilford were the kill leaders a week earlier, but the Panthers lost back-to-back league decisions to Presentation and Independence to finish 5-9 in the Mt. Hamilton Division.
