The Campbell Public Library, 77 Harrison Ave., is hosting a three-day workshop for children ages 10 to 18 on making "papel amate," or bark paper. Papel amate is an ancient pre-Columbian way of communication and art.

The workshop is from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 30, Dec. 14 and Dec. 21. Students' art will be displayed in at least two shows.

The program is offered by Casa de la Cultura Mexicana, a Santa Clara County nonprofit organization, and is funded by the Safeway Cares Program. Registration is required by Nov. 26. For more information or to register call 408.866.1991.

    Nonprofit sponsors sleeping-bag drive

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Santa Clara County is requesting donations of $19.99 to purchase a sleeping bag for someone sleeping outside, in a shelter or in a garage this winter.

The society purchases the sleeping bags at a discount from the Coleman Company to distribute through its 30 parish locations, the Homeless Care Force, St. Joseph's Family Center Ochoa Family Camp and other service agencies. The society hopes to purchase 1,500 bags this year; last year it was able to purchase more than 1,600 bags, and the numbers and needs of homeless people are increasing as the economic climate worsens.

Checks should be annotated with "sleeping bags for the homeless" and be sent to SVdP, 2040 S. Seventh St., San Jose, 95112. Donations are requested as soon as possible. For more information call 408.298.7290.
