    Moreland appoints new board member

There were no new candidates for school board seats during the Nov. 7 election, but Moreland School District has a new face on the board, nevertheless.

Taleen Nazarian was appointed to the school board at a special session on Nov. 14. Nazarian was chosen from four applicants to provisionally fill a seat vacated by Joe Alwan. Alwan had been re-elected in 1998, but resigned because his business responsibilities were forcing him to travel outside California, and he was missing too many board meetings.

Nazarian will hold the provisional seat until 2002, when she will have the option to run for election to retain the seat.

Superintendent Jim Ritchie said Nazarian was chosen for many reasons. She is a parent of twins, who are in kindergarten, he said, and has been an active volunteer for many years.

"She presented a strong candidacy," he said. "She's very well-spoken; she had some interesting ideas; and since she has some really young children, we know she'll be in the district for a while."

    Airport advising holiday travelers

Nov. 22 is the busiest travel day of the year at San Jose International Airport. Airport officials warn that Thanksgiving travelers should allow extra time to make their flights and should avoid driving to the airport. Travelers should plan to arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departure time, and expect delays.

Parking will be extremely limited, Luckenbach said. "We really are encouraging people to just not drive their cars to the airport," said airport spokesman Steve Luckenbach.

Free shuttles will take passengers from Brokaw Road off Coleman Avenue and Airport Boulevard at the Airport Warehouse to the terminals every 10 minutes from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Nov. 22.

Luckenbach said the airport expects about 200,000 people to travel through the airport from Nov. 22 to Nov. 26.

"This is the largest travel period of the year, bar none," he said. "Please don't drive to the airport."
