Theresa Adams was serious about quitting smoking. It was Thursday, Nov. 15, the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout day, and along with 17 million other people, she was going to quit that day. When she woke up in her Campbell home that morning and had a cigarette, Adams told herself, "This is the last time I will wake up and have a cigarette." When she finished her after-lunch cigarettes, she told herself, "This is the last time I will smoke cigarettes after lunch."
