Holiday themes abound around Campbell this festive month

    By Michelle C. Crowe

The Campbell Chamber of Commerce Toys for Tots fundraiser (aided by the Santa Clara County Fire Department) happens this Thursday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Gaslighter Theater at 400 E. Campbell Ave. The $10 ticket donation per person, as well as raffle tickets for prizes donated by local retailers, can be purchased either ahead of time or at the event. In addition to appetizers, anyone who missed Santa at the Carol of Lights and Tree-Lighting can again see the head elf when he arrives on his trusty fire truck. Call 408.378.6252 for details and tickets.

Amid the sad news that Gaslighter owner Robin Swartz has the Campbell icon up for sale, the good news is that the Dilemma at the Toll Booth show is still going on, and there are dates open for scheduling parties.

"The group rate kicks in at 20 or more people, and the theater can handle nearly 200 for special events," Swartz says. "While the exact price depends upon the catering and beverage arrangements, $35 per person is a good ballpark figure for estimating cost."

Considering the regular show-only rate is $20, ($15 for the Saturday matinee) and $40 for the dinner and show, it's a great team-building and/or customer appreciation opportunity (as well as a bargain)--especially for the fun of booing and throwing popcorn at the villains, without having to clean up afterward. Anyone interested in good old-fashioned fun should call Swartz directly at 408.866.1408.

In the holiday vein, two large local churches are offering free-to-the-public Christmas celebrations. The Home Church's Christmas Joy plays Saturday, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. The Home Church is located at 1711 S. Winchester Blvd.

Just a few blocks down, at 1201 S. Winchester Blvd., Bethel Church's Christmas Spectacular will run Friday, Dec. 14 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 16 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. All are welcome.

To see a display of Campbell (and entrepreneurial) holiday spirit, drive by "Santa's Workshop" at 802 Inwood Drive (between Inskip Drive and Elam Avenue off San Tomas Aquino Road). Run by Santa's exceptionally organized elves, Ron and Pam Campbell, the magical enterprise/holiday boutique is still going strong after 15 years. Animated displays and candy cane arches welcome visitors to see Santa from 6 to 9 p.m. nightly through Dec. 23.
