City council passes new trash rulings

On Feb. 4 the Campbell City Council approved an amendment requiring that garbage, recycling and yard waste containers be properly screened and waste bins not be placed on the curb more than 24 hours before pickup. These bins must also be removed within 24 hours after pickup. Slight changes were made to the amendment during the meeting to allow landscaping to be considered as an acceptable form of screening.

The matter was first brought before a city council meeting in October 2002 when a resident expressed concern that townhouse residents on Redding Road were leaving trash bins on the street and sidewalks. It was later brought to the Campbell Planning Commission on Jan. 14, where city staffers recommended that the city change its municipal code.

Andy's Bar-B-Que is month-to-month

Andy's Bar-B-Que, 700 E. Campbell Ave., faces an uncertain future as it plans to move to downtown Campbell's Odd Fellows Lodge. Owner Ken Smith said he's already turned in initial plans to the city and is presently waiting for a use permit, but talks are only in the preliminary stages.

"Being month-to-month doesn't make me feel secure," he said.

Smith says that ideally the restaurant would move to its new location by June 2003 since summer is the restaurant's busiest season, but the lodge will require a major remodel since it was not built to house a commercial restaurant business.

Signs approved for Pool Patio & Things

During a January Campbell Planning Commission meeting, commissioners voted to allow Pool Patio and Things to have a sign exception with additional conditions. Pool Patio and Things wanted a sign on the section of its new building that faces McBain Avenue and a logo panel on the front of the building facing S. Bascom Avenue. The wall sign would exceed the maximum allotted size of 34 square feet, and the logo sign would be a second wall sign, which is not permitted under the city's sign ordinance.

The planning commission approved an exception to the ordinance but commissioners expressed concern about the possibility of more signs in the future. Two additional conditions were attached to the approval—that the second floor of the building not be allowed to have signs and that no merchandise obscure or clutter the windows on the first floor.
