Campbell to award money to agencies

The city of Campbell will award $172,000 to 10 noncompetitive agencies in Santa Clara County for the fiscal year 200304 as part of its Community Development Block Grant program. Campbell Redevelopment Agency housing funds will provide an additional $6,000 for a total of $178,200.

The Emergency Housing Consortium, which houses homeless people in Campbell, will receive $9,000; Catholic Charities, which provides shared housing for single parents with children, will receive $6,000; Senior Adult Legal Services, which provides free legal counseling, will receive $5,000; and Sacred Heart, which has community services for very-low-income residents, will receive $7,500. Several other nonprofit organizations, including the Support Network for Battered Women and InnVision, also received funding.

The funds are allocated annually from the city during the new fiscal year, which begins in July.

In other news, at the March 18 city council meeting, Councilwoman Jeanette Watson announced her appointment to the position of chairwoman of the Santa Clara Valley Water District's county water commission. Discussion ensued about the increase in water rates. Mayor Dan Furtado said it was his understanding that the Santa Clara County Water District was raising the fees it charges the San Jose Water Company, which would eventually cause consumer prices to increase.
