Jamba Juice works with cancer society

Jamba Juice on S. Bascom Avenue is selling T-shirts designed by one of its employees as part of a campaign with the American Cancer Society. Jamba Juice will be donating a portion of the proceeds from each sale to the American Cancer Society.

The idea behind the T-shirts was to help raise breast-cancer awareness in the area.

Anne Marie Mendez, who designed the T-shirt, said she chose to work with the nonprofit because of the high breast-cancer rate in the Bay Area. The T-shirts seem to be going fast. At press time the store only had one left.

Last year Jamba Juice raised $166,000 for the nonprofit organization.

Community Center funding reallocated

The city council unanimously approved the reallocation of funds originally slated for the repaving of the Campbell Community Center Winchester Boulevard parking lot.

Those dollars, an estimated $174,000, will be added instead to the community center's master plan contingency fund.

The original percentage, 15 percent, was a contingency amount that was factored into the community center renovation based on the cost of prior projects, but significant issues arose during the renovation of the community center that were unforeseen at the outset. And weather-related factors also impeded the completion of the parking lot on Campbell Avenue for about a month. There were also several enhancements to the project that were still under review when the renovation began.

These enhancements included replacing the sod on the football field instead of seeding it, in an effort to provide earlier usage of the facility. The community center also requested that the track lanes be striped and a new goal post purchased for the football field. Additional lighting was also proposed for the bosque entryway to the Heritage Theatre.

To date 84 percent of the original contingency fund has been spent, leaving only $125,000 in the fund. City engineer Michelle Quinney told the city council that this left little leeway for any additional contingencies that might arise. The increase in the contingency fund will not affect the overall budget. The Aug. 5 approval of the reallocation of funds was one of the remaining steps in the renovation as the project draws closer to completion.

Councilman Matthew Dean said that the repaving deferral made sense.

Mayor Dan Furtado also pointed out that it is hard to predict every detail of a large project and that more than 50 percent of the changes were initiated by the city.

The only concern was raised by Councilwoman Jeanette Watson, who asked if the original goal posts could be saved because of their important history as part of the former Campbell High School.

Campbell's Blendz healthy alternative

Its unique art-deco-style logo immediately catches a stroller's eye when walking downtown. Blendz, one of downtown Campbell's newest tenants, will be officially welcoming the community with free smoothies, panini and juices during its Aug. 21 ribbon-cutting. The event will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 267 E. Campbell Ave.

"We welcome everyone to come down," co-owner Matt Phipps said.

Phipps said people are becoming more aware that Blendz is more than just a smoothie bar: it's a "healthier alternative to fast food." Besides smoothies, Blendz also sells tossed-to-order salads, grilled panini sandwiches and fresh-squeezed juice.
