Help the Campbell Museum Book Faire

Barnes & Noble Booksellers in the Pruneyard Shopping Center will donate 15 percent of its total sales on Nov. 22 to the Campbell Historical Museum.

"I just hope people will take the opportunity to do some early holiday shopping and support the museum," said museum director Gloria Chun Hoo.

Barnes & Noble works with the community and education organizations, developing partnerships with nonprofits, she said.

This is the first year the book-fair promotion is being held, and shoppers need a voucher to participate in the donation program. If sales exceed $10,000, the bookstore may contribute as much as 25 percent, Chun Hoo said.

Shoppers can pick up vouchers at the Campbell Historical Museum, Ainsley House Gift Shop and the Campbell Public Library.

Fire in coffeehouse, but damages minor

Coffee-to-go took on a whole new meaning at Campbell's Orchard Valley Coffee Roasting Company after dark smoke consumed the inside of the coffee shop, forcing customers and employees outside on the street.

The cause of the fire was in the lower part of the flue of the chimney pipe. The fire department was called to the scene at 12:29 p.m. on Nov. 14.

Firefighters put out the small flames inside Orchard Valley— on the corner of E. Campbell and Central avenues in the downtown—quickly and no damage was done to the coffee roaster or the building.

Orchard Valley Coffee Roasting Company co-owner John Benjamin called the smoke and flames "pretty uneventful."

According to Santa Clara County Fire Department Fire Captain Jeff Schwerdtfeger, the coffee shop will need to replace the flue pipe. He said that the flue pipe exhausts hot gases from the coffee roaster but that a tar-like substance called creosote can form in the flue pipe, and if it reaches a certain temperature, it could ignite, which is what happened in this instance.

Campbell poet reads work at celebration

The Poetry Center of San Jose will celebrate its 25th anniversary by hosting a birthday party for Campbell resident Nils Peterson, one of the center's founding members. Peterson, who will be celebrating his 70th birthday, will offer a reading from his body of literature, which spans more than 40 years.

The reading will take place on Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Fire House in the History Park of San Jose. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. The History Park is located on the south side of Kelley Park at 1650 Senter Road.
