New sign helps announce local events throughout Campbell
By Michelle C. Crowe
Michelle C. CroweAs the weather becomes warmer, expect Campbell to draw more people in. With a new digital sign advertising upcoming events at the Campbell Community Center and Heritage Theatre, commuters and residents alike are becoming more aware of not only where Campbell begins, but also what's actually happening here.

For example, Campbell Redevelopment Coordinator Francine Principe informs me that not only were the Heritage Theatre's Opening Gala and Open House events both successful, the Smothers Brothers show also sold out. As new events are added to the season, they'll be announced on the sign as well.

Although a business's closing too often signals failure, the closing of the Breuners Campbell Outlet Center at 525 E. Hamilton Ave. is a different kind of change. Long located at the back of the Breuners Home Furnishings Retail Store at the same address, the clearance center is officially closing to make way for progress.

The good news for customers is the closing means you can save some green (money, that is) on select home furnishings—anywhere from 30 to 70 percent off of retail prices on furniture and 75 percent on clearance area rugs. The other good news is that only the clearance center is closing, not the entire store. The bad news is once it's closed, the clearance center will relocate to another Breuners site.

Both facilities are open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 408.378.9400 to reach either facility.

Speaking of green...historic downtown Campbell will once again be the site of the city's St. Patrick's Day Festival on March 17. The fifth annual event begins at 4 p.m. and lasts until 9 p.m. Rock Bottom Brewery of The Pruneyard will provide the beer. (For those of you involved in past events, Rock Bottom's participation is a much-appreciated blessing, as the now-closed Stoddard's Brewhouse and Eatery had previously supplied the suds.) There's still time to volunteer and get involved. Call 408.378.0335 for more information.

March 17 also happens to be the date of the Campbell Chamber of Commerce's monthly luncheon. This month's meeting will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Capers Grill & Bar, located at 1710 W. Campbell Ave. in the Kirkwood Shopping Center. The fee for Chamber members who reserve a space is $17; the cost is $20 for those without reservations. Call the Chamber at 408.378.6252.

De Young Flowers, located at 1616 W. Campbell Ave., invites the public to its Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening on March 24, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. In addition to hors d'oeuvres and beverages, the event will feature door prizes. For information, call 408.378.1580.

Campbell's annual Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year Awards Dinner is set for March 27 at 6 p.m. at Villa Ragusa. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by calling 408.378.6252. Congratulations to Bhagwant (Bobby) and Ruby Dheri on celebrating their one-year anniversary as owners of the Expressions from the Heart gift store, located at 245 E. Campbell Ave. Store hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For more information, call 408.374.5053.

Two other businesses actually celebrated their anniversaries in December. Amy Vea, owner of EmbroidMe, located at 2252 S. Bascom Ave., celebrated her business's one-year anniversary. EmbroidMe specializes in promotional merchandise and advertising specialty items (think shirts, hats, and so forth). All of the work is designed and completed on-site, with the exception of large orders of screen-printing. The store is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 408.377.7657 for more information.

Also, Pilar and Andreas Wienke celebrated their three-year ownership of Montessori Academy of Campbell, located at 177 E. Rincon Ave. Longtime director Lucy Mitchell still runs the program, while Pilar and Andreas rotate their time spent at the school. The school can be reached at 408.378.9244 or online at www.montessoriacademy.net.

Frank Bardascino, owner of Barda's Coffee and Cafe, located in the Kirkwood Plaza at 1820-B W. Campbell Ave., continues to host monthly open mic poetry nights on the last Sunday evening of the month. In addition to offering locally grown organic coffee, Barda's features light breakfast and lunch fare. Currently Barda's is open from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Call 408.370.1477.

For an additional in-person networking opportunity, mark next month's calendar: for those merchants interested in what is happening downtown or interested in becoming involved in the downtown community, the Downtown Campbell Business Association meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 9 a.m., usually at Legacy Bank, located at 125 E. Campbell Ave. For details, call president Marsha Smith (owner of Mio Vicino) at 408.378.0335.

Congratulations to all of the members of the DCBA on the organization's three-year anniversary this month. It's people and businesses like these that make Campbell what it is today.
